A Bowie & Dick type autoclave test pack is a specialized biological indicator designed to verify the effectiveness and reliability of steam sterilization cycles in autoclaves. The test pack contains a strip of paper impregnated with spores of Bacillus stearothermophilus, a highly heat-resistant bacterium commonly used to assess sterilization performance. During a correctly functioning autoclave cycle, the high temperature and steam penetrate the pack and eliminate the bacterial spores, causing the indicator paper to remain white. If the autoclave fails to reach the required sterilization parameters, the spores will survive, and the paper will turn blue, signaling an unsuccessful cycle. To ensure accurate results, the test pack must be handled with care to prevent contamination. It should not be used if the seal is broken or if the indicator paper shows any signs of damage. After use, the test pack should be disposed of according to established biohazard waste procedures, ensuring compliance with safety and infection control standards.
